Members of the Port Townsend Pickleball Club will have the opportunity to take part in a clinic for referees during the last week of June. The clinic will be scheduled for June 28, 29 or 30 at the home of certified ref and Pickleball Ambassador, Kathy Thomas. The purpose of holding the clinic at this time is to train referees for our upcoming tournament for beginners (see details below in this newsletter). The clinic will last 2-3 hours followed by 2-3 hours of reffing games with specific scenarios. This is the perfect opportunity to get the training to not only referee in tournaments, but to become more familiar with pickleball rules changes and best practices for reffing. Kathy indicates that It would also be good if participants take both the lines and the player test for practice. (No pressure to pass either test). Both the rules and the tests are available online at the USA Pickleball Association website. If you are interested in this clinic, please contact Jeannie Ramsey with your preferred clinic date at jeannieram01@gmail.com or 360-531-4195. Photo taken at HS courts during Intermediate Round Robin. If you have been playing pickleball for less than a year and would like to compete with players you don’t often get to play with, participation in the Beginner Tournament on July 8 and 9 is for you! The tournament will consist of Men’s, Women’s and Mixed Doubles and will be both in round robin format for newer players with less-developed skills and double elimination bracket tournament for those with more developed skills. We are hoping to provide trained refs for the event so that players can get the full tournament experience. Play will be at the high school and possibly the Courthouse or Mountain View courts, depending on the number of entrants. The PTPC Board is hoping that there is a huge turnout for what promises to be an exciting event. If you would like to play, please sent the following information to Jeannie Ramsey, events coordinator: Your name and cell phone number. Event(s) Women’s doubles Partner? (Will be played on Friday, July 8) Men’s Doubles Partner? (Will be played on Friday, July 8) Mixed doubles Partner? (Will be played on Saturday, July 9) If you do not have a partner, no problem, one will be assigned to you. Hello, PT Picklers, Hopefully, Spring has finally arrived, but keep your fingers crossed. Things could change in a heartbeat. Help put us over the top! Foremost on the Board’s agenda is the Capital Campaign. We are so close to raising the funds we need to install the permanent pickleball courts at Mountain View. Thanks to all of you who have already contributed. Our 82 donors are primarily Club members, but that also means half of our members have not made a pledge to donate. If you have been meaning to (which is what I hear a lot) or you’re sitting on the fence (and fencing is an important part of the project), please consider making a pledge now. It’s easy to do - download the pledge form or donate onlineusing this link: https://www.ptpickleball.com/pledge-donationscapital-campaign.html. PTPC Board Positions Volunteers are the backbone of our Club, and three of our incredible volunteers are stepping down from the Board. I wish to thank Patti Rowdabaugh, Vice President, Craig Walls, Treasurer, and Kim Anderson, Director of Communications, for their years of hard work, dedication, and expertise in steering this Club toward reaching its goals. Their time and energy have been invaluable. That means, of course, their positions on the Board must be filled. So far the Nominating Committee has found two volunteers who are stepping up: Kirk Rowdabaugh for Treasurer, and Mark Finco for Director of Communications. We are grateful that these members are willing to donate their time and skills to the Club. We still need to fill the position of Director of Membership. This person tracks all of the members, including new members and renewals, and works closely with the Treasurer and the Director of Communications. A knowledge of a spreadsheet program is necessary, preferably Excel. If you or someone you know might be willing to take on this task, please contact Patti Rowdabaugh at ptpickleball@gmail.com. PTPC Annual Meeting/Potluck We hope you will mark the date of Saturday, June 25, on your calendar for our first Annual Meeting/Potluck, from 3:00-5:00 pm. It has been postponed for two years because of Covid, and it will be held at the HJ Carroll Park Pavilion. One item of business will be to elect the new members of the Board. The final slate of nominees will be sent out before then, but anyone can nominate another candidate from the floor. Mostly, the gathering is a time to meet new players, socialize, share pickleball adventures, and have fun. All are welcome, but only members can vote. Club Events It is great to see all of the activities that the Club is sponsoring. We have Jeannie Ramsey to thank for these –the Challenge Ladders, the Round Robin, the Intermediate Clinic with Doug Hastings, all of which are maxxed out with participation. We have a Referee Clinic and Beginner/Advanced Beginner tournament to look forward to soon. Meanwhile, Social Saturday continues to be well-attended. Many thanks, Jeannie. Hope to see you on the courts and at the Annual Meeting, and as always, Happy Pickling! Lynn We are getting closer to our goal. Here is the latest on the Pledge Campaign to renovate the Mountain View Courts. Thank you to all who have made a pledge to donate, we appreciate your support. If you haven't already and would like to make a donation, please click here. Meet Club Member Joel C. Janetski. I grew up in Great Falls, Montana, with a fishing rod in one hand and a shotgun in the other. My father was an amateur archaeologist and my experiences with him exploring remnants of the lives of ancient people eventually led me to a 30-year career as an archaeologist and university professor at Brigham Young University (BYU) in Provo, Utah. I loved my work and my students and continue a modest level of involvement in the discipline. My career focused on exploring the pre-European history of the arid west (Utah, Arizona, Nevada) for the most part, although I also pursued projects in Western Samoa and Jordan. Read more. The Round Robin Friday weekly has been a grand success! Thank you to Jeannie Ramsey, our Club's event planner (far right), who has organized and made this a fun event for all.

INTERMEDIATE CLINIC TAUGHT BY DOUG HASTINGS, 5.0 AND CERTIFIED INSTRUCTOR MOUNTAIN VIEW COURTS SUNDAY, MAY 22, 10 AM - 12 PM LIMITED TO 8 PLAYERS (A SECOND SESSION FROM 1-3 PMMAY BE HELD IF NUMBERS INDICATE) CLINIC IS $30/PERSON/PREPAID RSVP to Jeannie Ramsey, 360-531-4195 or jeannieram01@gmail.com For Intermediate players who want to get to the next level. The clinic is designed to improve your stroke mechanics and to help you become a more consistent player. It will cover: A. Soft game - dinking, blocking, volleying, offensive lob B. Transition game- 3rd shot drop, drives, lobs C. Specialty shot selection - overheads, drop shots D. Serve and return E. Court positioning 1. To respect our neighbors, please keep noise to a minimum. 2. If players can adjust their play level, they may play at skill levels below their level. Players can attempt to play at the next level up but should use their judgment as to whether they can compete at that level. 3. If not enough players show up for the beginner court, then three courts would be designated for Intermediate/Advanced Intermediate. The same would be true for the Advanced. There should be at least six players there for the court to be designated Beginner or Advanced. In other words, court assignments would be fluid depending on the number and type of players there. Adv and Beg courts can play with fewer than 6 players if there are not many players waiting on the Intermediate courts. 4. This is a new schedule and is intended to be changed as we learn more about play patterns and needs. Player Rotation for Drop-In and Open Play Generally, follow the procedure that has been used in the past. If 1 player is waiting, that player goes in and one comes out. If there are 2-4 players waiting, the two losing players go out, the winners split, and the 2 players next in line go in. If more than four players are waiting, four go in and four go out. Winners should limit their games to 2 in a row, and then come out. Use the paddle holders to determine who is up next. Remember these are all public courts and anyone can play on them. We are using them as available. Portable nets and balls in boxes belong to PTPC. Reminder: Renew your annual PTPC Membership by July 1, 2022.
