  I have no idea how to rate myself. Am I a 2.5 player? If I see 3.0 players scheduled, would I fit in? These are questions heard from many newer players to the game every place the game is played. PTPC members will have the opportunity to become rated on Saturday, July 9 or Sunday, July 17. The ratings will be done by the more advanced members of the club using specific guidelines set forth by the USA Pickleball Association. The way this works is that players with similar skills organize themselves into groups of four. That group will play three games, each game with a different player in their group. There will be four raters, three of whom will rate each player on various skills such as serve, dink, volley, third shot drop, as well as forehand and backhand strokes. The scores will then be averaged for players to receive a specific rating. Why should I be rated? There are several reasons for receiving a rating. One of the biggest is that if you are traveling to a destination that may have a pickleball club, you will be able to say, “I am a 3.0 player. I would like to play with others who are at that level.” A rating will also give you an idea of what division you might enter in a tournament or even rated play within our own or other clubs. To be rated, players are asked to complete a skill assessment (available on our website under the Events tab) and bring it to the rating session. You are welcome to choose your own group of four players or if you do not have a group, you will be placed by the raters with a group. Each rating session should last less than an hour and will be scheduled at the Mountain view courts from 9 am-1 or 2 pm on whichever day you prefer. We had a small group, but everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. Thanks to Jeannie Ramsey who provided wonderful raffle prizes throughout. Here is a recap of the meeting. We announced the success of our Capital Campaign to cheers and applause. We exceeded our goal of $35,000 with a total so far of $38,805, and pledges continue to come in. I want to commend the Capital Campaign Committee of Susan Green, Joel Janetski, Stan Jonasson, and Fred Weinmann for all their hard work. The Capital Campaign was launched in April after the Mountain View site was designated for permanent pickleball courts. That process took 8 months and culminated with our signing a Donor Agreement in March, 2022. Many thanks go to the Facilities Committee, Eric Seder, Jim Dow, and Craig Walls. These were the Club’s biggest accomplishments for the year. Other accomplishments of the Club this past year include: • The opening of the Courthouse Park Courts, spurred by PTPC lobbying • Collaboration with the YMCA for an indoor pickleball program • Free beginner lessons, both indoors and outdoors • Organized activities for Club members, like Social Saturday, the Round Robin and Challenge Ladder, with more on the calendar for the near future (Again, thank you to Stan Jonasson and Jeannie Ramsey who have led these activities) • Many more new members (nearly 40 more over last year’s total)Jim Dow gave a brief report from the Facilities Committee. The Club has made a down payment on a contractor who will install the courts at Mountain View, hopefully, before the end of the summer. It is understood that this is tenuous, as so much depends on the weather, the supply chain, and other variables. We will keep our fingers crossed! Craig Walls presented the Treasurer’s Report with the next fiscal year budget. An itemized budget will appear on the Members’ Portal of the website after the new Board approves it in July. Patti Rowdabaugh has graciously offered to temporarily fill in doing membership duties when the membership chair was vacated in May. She announced that our members now total 191 (+1 who joined at the meeting!). Candidates for Board positions for the term July 1, 2022 to June 30, 2024, were introduced. Kirk Rowdabaugh for Treasurer and Mark Finco for Communications Director were present. Jim Maupin for Vice-President and Eric Seder for Facilities Director were unable to attend. Voting takes place from Sunday through Wednesday, till 5:00. Only members are allowed to vote. If anyone did not receive a ballot, please contact me at ptpickleball@gmail.com. Finally, we bid farewell to our retiring Board members: Craig Walls, Treasurer; Patti Rowdabaugh, Vice-President; and Kim Anderson, Communications Director. We so appreciate their dedication, service, and collegiality, and each was uniquely valuable to the organization. They received a gift certificate, a small token of the Club’s gratitude. Summer is here, finally! Happy Pickling, Lynn PTPC Board Opening - M  Being a PTPC Board member gives you an opportunity to provide leadership for the pickleball community. The Club needs someone to volunteer for this position. This position does not require an extensive amount of time. For someone with knowledge of spreadsheet apps, preferably Excel, the work is a snap. The Director works closely with the Treasurer and Communications Director to manage the membership rolls. The PTPC Board is a collegial group dedicated to promoting pickleball in Jefferson County. Board meetings occur once a month and last 1 1/2 to 2 hours. He is coming to Sequim on July 16th and 17th. Both days are independent of each other and are designed for two groups of folks for each day. Each day will be around a four hour clinic or camp. He loves the physical, social and friendly competitive aspects of the game, and wants contribute to keeping it strong and growing in PT. Recently, Jim helped coordinate the pickleball program at the Y and instructed new players. Treasurer - Kirk Rowdabaugh Kirk Rowdabaugh is a retired forester who learned the game of pickleball while living in Virginia in 2012. Kirk moved to Port Townsend with his wife Patti in 2016 and quickly located the few other pickleball players in town. An active volunteer for the Club since its founding, Kirk believes the Club’s success depends on the active participation of its members and is looking forward to working with the Board and its new bookkeeper to ensure the Club’s financial records meet the requirements for future solicitations of grants and large donor contributions. Communications Director - Mark Finco Mark Finco is a new Port Townsend resident and new to pickleball! He worked for 25 years as a contractor to the US Forest Service, doing mapping work that utilized satellite images, aerial photographs, and other ways of remotely viewing the landscape. Also, as one of the owners of his company, he was involved with business development and proposal writing. Now that his work responsibilities are waning, he's looking forward to playing a lot more, traveling a little more, and contributing to the community however he can. He welcomes the opportunity to serve on the Board. Facilities Director - Eric Seder Eric and his wife Susan moved to Port Townsend in 2019 from Sun Valley, ID, where they owned their own business. Both are avid pickleball players. Eric has served on the PTPC Board for the past two years, as Member-at-Large and Facilities Director. He has graciously volunteered to serve for another two-year term. Eric has been an advisor to the County on behalf of the PTPC and was instrumental in the Club's success in negotiations with the City to secure the site at Mountain View for permanent pickleball courts. Membership Director - still need a volunteer Keeps membership records, including the roster and dues records; sends renewal notices on expiring memberships; develops the Code of Conduct/Etiquette policy and is the point person for member issues; works closely with the Treasurer and Director of Communications; and strives to increase membership. Oversees the Membership Committee. Must have knowledge of spreadsheet apps, preferably Excel. Voting will be online, from Sunday, June 26, beginning at 7:00 am. A link to the ballot will be sent to all current members. Voting will close on Wednesday, June 29, at 5:00 pm. Results will be announced shortly thereafter. Summer Schedule for PTHS The following chart is the schedule for Port Townsend High School for the summer, starting June 1, 2022. Note: Mondays and Wednesdays are Rated Play, Drop-In. Please welcome visitors and rotate them into play. On Monday and Wednesday, the schedule is loosely organized around Rated Play. Follow these guidelines: --For Beginner and Advanced courts, there should be a minimum of 6 players. If not, incorporate players into Intermediate/Advanced. --Players may play down in skill level, but they should adjust their play. --If players are waiting, use the rotation system for skill designated courts:
--Use the paddle board to determine who goes in next. On Tuesday, Thursday and Friday morning (9:00-11:00), there is Scheduled Play. Remember that Playtime Scheduler is a communication tool, not a reservation system. For these days, players use Playtime Scheduler to signify they wish to play with their own group. Round Robin play is on Friday at 11:00-1:00. Social Saturday, all Open Play, is from 9:00-1:00. Summer Schedule for Mountain View Courts MV courts are open to the public for all daylight hours. Players may use Playtime Scheduler to organize play at Mountain View. Please schedule on the odd hours - 9:00-11:00, 11:00-1:00, 1:00-3:00, and so forth to provide for the best allocation of time.
