Takeaways

Hello, PT Picklers,

Recently, the Board conducted two different forums for gathering input from the Club membership. One was a survey focused on court scheduling, the Mountain View upgrade, and various other Club issues. We had an excellent response rate of over 55%. You can see all of the survey results on the homepage of our website. The other forum was a Special Meeting on October 12 at HJ Carroll Park Pavilion. In spite of cool temperatures, wind, and the prospect of rain, 26 hardy souls turned out for the meeting, including 9 Board members. Here are some takeaways from these two events.

Scheduling

The survey asked members which type of play they preferred, Open Play, Rated Play, or Scheduled Play. A slight majority said Scheduled Play, with Rated Play a close second and Open Play far behind. Yet when members were asked how they would allocate these types of play if we were limited to 10 sessions, the results were Open Play, 4 sessions, and the other two types, 3 sessions each. A possible explanation for this discrepancy is that those who prefer Scheduled Play or Rated Play also recognize the value of Open Play for its social aspect, as well as integrating beginners into the mix.

We also clarified one point. Scheduled (or Reserved) Play simply means that you are organizing a group you wish to play with. Even so, anyone could walk up and join your play. All of the courts currently in use in Port Townsend are public courts, and we want to be a welcoming and inclusive pickleball community.

Mountain View Upgrade

PTPC is currently seeking an upgrade to the Mountain View site, and the work is progressing slowly. After we received approval from the Parks, Rec, and Trees Advisory Board (PRTAB) for the proposal we submitted, some alternative proposals were suggested. These alternatives are currently being studied by the Board.

One of these alternatives involves the number of courts on the existing slab at MV. Our choices at the moment are three courts with 12 feet of space and fencing between the courts, or four courts on the current layout with 5 feet and no fencing between. (In both cases, one of the pickleball courts on the end is also a multi-use court. The pickleball net would be a roll-away net, not a portable one. The multi-use court would accommodate the Y programs.)

The survey results showed a slight majority preferring the 3-court option. A show of hands at the meeting showed a significant number preferring the 4-court option. Additional information is forthcoming as we conduct more research on what we can do. The important thing to keep in mind is that even after we complete this MV project, we will continue to pursue more permanent, pickleball-only courts on or near the MV site, as per our Strategic Plan.

Communications

The responses in the survey about how the Board is managing court availability, scheduling, and communications were heartening. A significant majority agreed that things were good, with no complaints. An even higher percentage disagreed that they don’t feel listened to (which I interpret to mean they do feel listened to).

And your Communications team is pleased that more than 80% of the respondents said they access the newsletter and blast for their information. Our “open” rate for these messages averages 60%, which is outstanding (an open rate of 15%-25% is considered good). Folks also use Playtime Scheduler and the PTPC website for current news and updates.

Future Board Meetings

Before Covid, we were having our Board meetings at Jefferson County Library. That changed when we went into lockdown. We began meeting on Zoom, and when the weather turned nice, we met at a member’s backyard or deck. Until the Library re-opens its meeting rooms, we will continue that practice. Anyone who wishes to attend a Board meeting, either in person or on Zoom, is welcome. Simply email me at ptpickleball@gmail.com, and I’ll tell you where and how you can attend.

The meeting agendas and minutes are posted on the website. Please feel free to discuss any issues you might have with any Board member.

For those of you heading to warmer climates, safe travels. To those of us who remain here, keep on pickling!
