Congratulations to Sharlene Shiroma and her partner Bill Dennis of Port Ludlow Pickleball Club. The two took a bronze medal in Mixed Doubles, 3.5, 60+ at the ETC/Kirkland Holiday Pickleball Smash, held in December, 2021. Way to go, Bill and Shar! Over the weekend, Jeannie Ramsey and her partner Terry Williams from Canada won a bronze medal in the 4.0- 50+ Women's doubles tournament in San Carlos, Mexico. Congratulations, ladies! Hello, PT Picklers, Happy New Year! I hope this message finds you all doing well and staying safe. Pickleball Rules Changes for 2022. As usual, there are a few rules changes to be aware of for 2022. The ones that most impact us are as follows: 1) The “provisional” drop serve is no longer provisional. It’s now perfectly legal, but the drop has to be visible to the receiver/referee. If not visible, it can be replayed. 2) If the wrong score is called, a player cannot stop play to correct it. The point should just be played out and then the score can be corrected at the end of play. If a player does stop play because of the wrong score, it is a fault. 3) The chain saw serve is illegal. I know no one who has ever tried to use this serve, and so I don’t think it’s a big deal to most of us. You can still spin the ball before you serve it, but you have to do it with the non-paddle hand. Other proposed changes did not make the list, like rally scoring and reinstating the let serve. Earbuds are banned during tournament play, but not during recreational play. So those who like to jam while playing, jam on. We have nothing new to report on this front, but we are keeping apprised of any progress. Once a window of opportunity opens for us, we’ll let you know. Social Saturdays. Picklers have been able to play on some Saturdays if the weather cooperates. On Saturday, Jan. 15, for example, 25 players showed up on a cloudy, but rain-free morning, and from what I hear, they were active with a lot of laughter! Stan Jonasson has volunteered to be the point person for Social Saturdays. Thank you so much, Stan. Playing through Covid. As we struggle with yet another surge of the virus, there has been no official changing of the protocol for playing pickleball. Gathering for outside play is relatively low risk, if players are using good sense, and we encourage everyone to be safe. Please don’t come to play if you have any symptoms or if you have been exposed to Covid. Playing indoors is more of a risk, but everyone has to decide what is tolerable in their individual situations. Happy Pickling, Lynn The bill was passed by the Senate Committee on State Government and Elections on 1/14 and sent to the Rules Committee for a second reading. This group got together, had a whole lot of fun and made it happen. With hard work and perseverance they were able to accomplish what they set out to do. Let’s play ball! (All photos sent in by Toni Davison, Susi Feller and Sharlene Shiroma.) Mary, Toni, Susi, Sharlene, Fred, Jen and Kim from Cape George all getting a good workout. Y'all are amazing!
