Fequently Asked Questions
We're a nonprofit organization founded in 2019 dedicated to promoting pickleball throughout Port Townsend and Jefferson County. With over 200 members, we've helped establish five permanent courts and offer year-round playing opportunities, tournaments, clinics, and community events.
Pickleball is a fun blend of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong played with lightweight paddles and a perforated ball on a smaller court. The court is about one-quarter the size of a tennis court, making it easier on the joints, and the underhand serve and "no-volley zone" near the net create unique strategic elements that make the game accessible yet challenging.
Absolutely not! We welcome players of all skill levels, from complete beginners to advanced competitors. We offer free beginner lessons and have playing opportunities designed for every ability level.
You'll need a pickleball paddle (lighter than a tennis racket), pickleballs (plastic balls with holes), and court shoes with good lateral support. Many of our courts have equipment available for beginners to try, and our club maintains extra paddles and balls in storage lockers for member use.
We have five fantastic locations: three outdoor venues at Port Townsend High School, Mountain View Commons, and Jefferson County Courthouse Park, plus indoor winter play at the YMCA.
Yes! The smaller court means less running, the underhand serve is gentler on shoulders, and the lower net height reduces overhead strain. The lighter paddle and ball also create less impact on wrists and elbows. Many players who can no longer play tennis comfortably find pickleball allows them to stay active and competitive.
Key rules include: serve underhand and diagonally, let the ball bounce once on each side before volleying, stay out of the "kitchen" (no-volley zone) when hitting volleys, and only the serving team can score points. Games are typically played to 11 points, winning by 2. Don't worry—our members are always happy to help newcomers learn!
Annual membership is just $40. Benefits include access to equipment storage, priority event registration, member discounts, exclusive portal access, and the satisfaction of supporting our community's pickleball growth.
