About the Port Townsend Pickleball Club
From humble beginnings on old concrete to five permanent courts—discover how our passionate community built the heart of Jefferson County pickleball.
The Port Townsend Pickleball Club (PTPC) was officially formed in June 2019. Since then, we've worked tirelessly to develop amazing places to play and grow our vibrant membership. Our club members enjoy year-round pickleball at Port Townsend High School, Mountain View Commons, and Jefferson County Courthouse Park outdoors, with winter indoor sessions at the YMCA. We now proudly boast over 200 members and three hundred picklers on our mailing list!

OUR STORY

In the early 2010s, two pickleball pioneers changed our community forever. Mary Critchlow and Jack Olmsted discovered this addictive sport, shared their passion with neighbors, and convinced the city to let them paint court lines on old concrete at Mountain View. With that simple act, pickleball took root in Port Townsend.

Fast forward to June 2019, when Mary Critchlow teamed up with Lynn Pierle, our local USAPA pickleball ambassador, to officially launch the Port Townsend Pickleball Club. Along with six other enthusiastic players, they formed a Founding Board with ambitious goals: promote pickleball throughout East Jefferson County and create more places to play.

That first year was a whirlwind! We achieved nonprofit status, launched our Facebook page and website, adopted bylaws, recruited 100+ members immediately, transformed a Port Townsend High School tennis court into four pickleball courts, and established indoor play at the YMCA.

When our first elected Board took the helm in July 2020, momentum continued building. Through persistent advocacy, we convinced county and city leaders to invest in permanent courts. The payoff? Two stunning courts at Courthouse Park in 2021, followed by three more at Mountain View in fall 2022—funded by an incredible $40,000 capital campaign driven largely by passionate pickleball players.

Even when COVID slowed progress, our Board kept working behind the scenes. We adopted our Strategic Plan in April 2021, charting a clear course for the future.

Today, PTPC represents 200+ players and continues advocating for more courts. We offer free beginner lessons, host exciting tournaments and clinics, and create memorable experiences through Round Robins and skill drills. Ready to join the fun and help us reach new goals? Become a member today!
