Heidi & Weston's Victory Dance -- 2024 Mixed Doubles Champs
Heidi & Weston's Victory Dance -- 2024 Mixed Doubles Champs

The Port Townsend Pickleball Club has several events and opportunities that we’re hosting over the next few months, hopefully you can join in the fun.  First, we’d like to thank Bud Hodson for the wonderful picnic table he provided to the Courthouse Park Courts.  It is a welcome, much-needed addition to the courts!

Heidi Lappetito Memorial Advanced Tournament (3.75-4.5)

Saturday-Sunday, 15-16 August

The Club will host this advanced tournament at the Mountain View courts with Men’s and Women’s Doubles matches on Saturday and Mixed Doubles on Sunday.  Players can now sign up through Playtime Scheduler. Entry fee is $10 per player per event for Club members and $20 per player per event for non-members.  Players should should pay fees through the Club’s website at this link (click on the 15 or 16 August calendar page):  https://www.ptpickleball.com/events.

We still need volunteers to help with this tournament, both on August 15th and 16th. Please contact Katie Holmes if you are interested in volunteering (206-240-4022)

Intermediate Level Tournament (3.0-3.5)

Saturday-Sunday, 5-6 September

PTPC will hold an Intermediate Tournament (3.0-3.5) at the Mountain View courts with Men’s and Women’s Doubles matches on Saturday and Mixed Doubles on Sunday.  Please sign up through Playtime Scheduler, starting 29 July.  Entry fee is $10 per player per event for Club members and $20 per player per event for non-members.  Pay for events using the Club’s website Events page at this link (click on the 5 or 6 September calendar page): https://www.ptpickleball.com/events.

Mortimer Round Robin Social

Sunday, 20 September from 1-4PM, High School Courts

In this format, teams of three compete against each other where the first two players play as normal and the third player must stay behind a blue tape line placed six feet inside the baseline to play deep balls in that area.  When either front player makes an error, they become the Mortimer.  This is a very fun format where all levels of players can join in the hilarity.  This Social is free and open to PTPC Members.  You can signup via Playtime Scheduler, beginning on Monday, 1 September.

Additional Social Saturday Session

The PTPC would like to start a second Social Saturday session from 12-2 to meet the current high demand.  This session would have two dedicated beginner courts to help beginners find others at their level to play with (demand dependent).  To do this, we need a host for this recurring event.  If you are willing to host the 12-2 session of Social Saturday please contact Katie Holmes (206-240-4022) or any Board Member.

Are you interested in your Pickleball rating?

Since the Pickleball Club’s Annual Meeting, several Members have expressed interest in receiving a rating from a Certified Coach/Rater. Members might find this rating is especially useful prior to the upcoming tournaments.

Here is a note from Kendal Wake, of the Sequim Pickleball Club:

I am offering certified ratings for a $20.00 fee.  The evaluation process takes about half an hour and includes assessment based on drives to the baseline, approach shots to the net, overheads, serves, volleys, and dinks.  Scoring is primarily based on consistency.

I will also record the session and send you a copy.  Once you receive the score sheet, you can compare these results with the video.  Additionally, I will provide suggestions for improvement.  The video and score sheet can serve as tools for practice or for working with a coach to enhance your game.

Kendal is willing to come to Port Townsend to rate Club members if we can get several together on the same day. Please contact Gordy Iwata at (206) 300-9423 if you are interested in getting rated.
